Chelation

As an astute physician with a vast knowledge in environmental medicine, Dr. daSilva believes that there are NO safe levels of heavy metals in the human body and that heavy metals such as Lead, Mercury, Arsenic and Aluminum have no biological use in our bodies and are therefore dangerous.  Heavy metal toxicity if left alone can lead to fatigue, nausea, insomnia, impaired mental function, nervousness, hormone disturbances, Alzheimer’s, heart disease and damage to many other vital organs.

What is Heavy Metal Toxicity?

Heavy metal toxicity from chronic environmental exposure is often unrecognized because its symptoms are similar to many other health conditions. Although some heavy metals are part of a healthy diet (the trace elements iron, copper, manganese, and zinc), others (including arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, and aluminum) may become toxic when they accumulate in soft tissues after exposure through food, water, air, or absorption through the skin. Although arsenic and lead still lead the list of toxic heavy metals, potential mercury poisoning from fish such as tuna and swordfish, childhood immunizations, and dental fillings has aso caused increased concern.

What is Chelation Therapy?

Chelation therapy is the administration of chelating agents to remove heavy metals from the body.

Chelation therapy consists of IV injections of a number of agents, but mostly of a synthetic amino acid called Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid (EDTA). Upon being introduced intravenously into the bloodstream, EDTA binds or “chelates” with certain minerals and substances that are present in the blood, blood vessel walls, & other tissues throughout the body. The chelated minerals and substances (i.e., toxic metals) are then disposed of through the urine.

Facts about Chelation Therapy

  • Chelation Therapy is among the safest of medical treatments
  • Over 500,000 American adult patients and about 8 million people in Canada and overseas have received the treatment
  • Multimillions of chelation treatments have been provided to young people for lead poisoning to date
  • EDTA Chelation is FDA approved for Heavy Metal Toxicity
  • EDTA was first synthesized in 1930 by a German Chemist name F. Munz
  • The original use of EDTA chelation was for Heavy Metal Toxicity particularly for Lead (FDA approved for this purpose)
  • The medical potential of the chelating agent was demonstrated dramatically in 1951 when EDTA saved the life of a child suffering from Lead poisoning (see “Chelation,” by Harold F Walton, Scientific American, June 1953)
  • EDTA was also applied against lead poisoning in workers employed at battery factories
  • The US Navy used chelation to remove Lead from the arteries and tissues of sailors who absorbed it while they painted Navy ships and dock facilities
  • In the past 12 years of record keeping, not one death has occurred due specifically to chelation therapy when administered by physicians who follow the standard protocol of the American College of Advancement in Medicine (ACAM).

At daSilva Institute we adhere to all of the guidelines that have been set forth to properly administer and oversee chelation therapy.
